Born in New York and raised in Memphis, Stephen Spaulding currently lives in Charleston, SC. Stephen received a B.M.E. from FloridaStateUniversity, where he studied trombone under Professor John Drew and Mark Britt and sang in ensembles for the renowned Dr. Andre Thomas. He served as Band Director at Ft. Lauderdale HS for two years during a transitional period before returning to the Charleston to serve as Band Director at a middle school and high school in the rural Charleston area. As his passion for performing was rekindled, Stephen helped form the band SKWZBXX (Squeezebox) as trombonist and successfully toured the Southeast and East Coast during the late 1990’s. Stephen currently teaches beginning, intermediate, and jazz bands in six schools in the Charleston area under the umbrella of the established Leonard School of Music. He has performed with the Florida Philharmonic Chorus and Chamber Choir under the direction of Dr. Paul Eisenhart, was a soloist with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir, and was tenor section leader at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Charleston. Stephen was an inaugural member of the Taylor Festival Choir in 2000 and has sung for Dr. Taylor for six seasons in this prestigious ensemble.
